My research focuses on health disparities and the social determinants of health among socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. I am particularly interested in understanding individual- and system-level factors influencing health behaviors, identifying barriers to care, and testing potential solutions for improving care. A substantial number of my publications investigate the perspectives of health care providers, staff, patients, and/or caregivers toward particular health care approaches, technologies, and experiences in order to identify systemic opportunities and constraints.
Working for the VA, the largest integrated health care system in the country, offers an unparalleled opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Veterans and to bridge the research-practice divide. As the daughter of a Veteran, it is an honor for me to contribute to supporting and improving health care for Veterans.
Over the next decade, I hope my work will contribute to the development and implementation of innovative interventions to improve stakeholder experiences and outcomes. I also hope that my work will lead to deeper understanding of how organizations’ and institutions’ structure, culture, and processes affect dynamics within and across the healthcare ecosystem, which will ultimately result in improved system functionality and effectiveness.

Building a Community of Practice around Virtual Qualitative Methods

Description: The COVID-19 pandemic forced a number of changes to the qualitative research cycle, including an increased use of technology-mediated approaches to qualitative research. These more digital research workflows have opened up new data sources (e.g., chats alongside video), normalized some underutilized data sources (e.g. video recording), and confounded traditional data collection methods (e.g., direct observation and site visits). These changes have generated questions about information security and privacy, rigor, and equity. The presenters will explore some of these modifications and innovations using case studies of research projects that had to transition to, or begin with, COVID-sensitive processes. The presentation will end with resources for our continued engagement with virtual qualitative methods.

Stakeholder Perspectives on VA Access Research Priorities: Development of an Access Research Roadmap

Description: Description: As part of the Veterans Access Research Consortium, the Stakeholder Engagement Workgroup has engaged with access researchers within and outside VA, Veterans, and VA operational partners to solicit perspectives about the most important access-related research domains for VA to address in the next decade. Recent efforts from the workgroup include conducting (1) a modified Delphi panel, (2) a series of dialogues with Veteran Engagement Boards, (3) surveying and conducting individual interviews with operational partners, and (4) contributing to the creation of a research roadmap that incorporates findings from these efforts with a portfolio review of current and recent HSR&D and operationally-funded studies on access. The goal of this work is to inform VA HSR&D’s funding priorities for access research and, thus, the direction of the field. This Cyberseminar will describe the highest priority access-related questions that emerged from this process and suggest opportunities to bridge research and operational interests.

Expanding the Qualitative Repertoire: Methodological Innovation to Advance Understanding of Perspectives and Behaviors

Description: Over the past decade, qualitative methods have become increasingly integrated into health services research. However, the most common qualitative approaches remain those that involve data collection via interviews and focus groups. This cyberseminar provides an introduction to newer and more innovative qualitative approaches that may be less well known to health researchers but which allow additional insights into individual- and system-level factors that influence stakeholder perspectives and behaviors. The advantages and disadvantages of each approach will be discussed so that researchers can determine the appropriate methodological choice for their needs.

Engaging Stakeholders in Identifying VA Access Research and Evaluation Priorities: A Foundation for the Access Research Roadmap

Description: The Stakeholder Engagement Workgroup engages access researchers within and outside VA, Veterans, and VA operational partners to solicit their perspectives about the most important access-related research domains for VA to address in the next decade. The ultimate goal of this work is to inform VA HSR&D’s funding priorities for access research and, thus, help shape the direction of the field. Recent efforts from the workgroup include conducting (1) a modified Delphi panel and (2) a series of dialogues with Veteran Advisory Boards (VABs). The Delphi process involved a multi-round engagement of 22 access researchers and VA operational partners, in which these experts identified important access related questions and then ranked them in terms of priority for VA support. Veterans’ perspectives on those questions and domains were then solicited from VABs in Iowa City, IA; Ann Arbor, MI; and Bedford, MA. This CyberSeminar will describe the engagement involved in this work and the highest priority access-related questions that emerged from the process.
