Health Services Research Fellowship Programs

COIN participates in the VA Advanced Fellowship Program in Health Services Research & Development trains and mentors the next generation of VA HSR&D scientists and physician scientists. Both the Seattle and Denver sites offer PhD and MD Fellowships.
Meet some of the COIN Fellows.
Seattle Fellowships
Seattle offers both PhD Fellowships led by Emily Williams, PhD, MPH and John C. Fortney, PhD and MD Fellowships led by Karin M. Nelson, MD, MSHS and Ann O'Hare, MD.
Seattle PhD Fellowship
The PhD Fellowship increases skills in health services research. Fellows are expected to engage in full-time research on a publishable health services project, participate in related educational activities including selected course work at the University of Washington (UW), and participate in VA research review meetings. The PhD Fellowship is co-chaired by Drs. Williams and Fortney.

Seattle MD Fellowship
The MD Fellowship is for physicians who have completed residency training and focuses on preparing physicians for successful careers in academic medicine as independent researchers and trains physicians pursuing a wide variety of research and clinical interests, including General Internal Medicine and its specialties. The MD Fellowship is co-chaired by Drs. Nelson and O'Hare.

Denver Fellowships
Denver offers both PhD and MD Fellowships and is led by Catherine Battaglia, PhD, RN and Christine Jones, MD, MS.
Denver PhD Fellowship
The PhD Fellowship provides research experiences that will better position the research fellows to impact and improve Veterans health. PhD Fellows will do so through healthcare improvement activities and projects, in addition to activities related to scholarship (e.g., manuscripts, presentations, grants). The PhD Fellowship is chaired by Dr. Battaglia and affiliated with the University of Colorado Denver-Anschutz Medical Campus.

Denver MD Fellowship
The MD Fellowship provides research experiences that will better position the research fellows to impact and improve Veterans health. MD Fellows can expect to spend 75 percent of their time in research, healthcare improvement, and/or educational activities and 25 percent in clinical care. The PhD Fellowship is chaired by Dr. Battaglia and affiliated with the University of Colorado Denver-Anschutz Medical Campus.
